Planning
a
bridal shower?
|
|
Here
are some basic
tips to help you plan
a successful
wedding shower: |
- Have
the bride's wedding gift wish list in hand
before settling on a bridal shower theme.
- Choose
the wedding shower guest list according
to etiquette
rules - offending people will be a problem
for you and for the bride.
- Plan
ahead so that you send out the invitations
at the appropriate time, and follow up when
an invitation does not initiate a response,
so that you have a good handle on the number
of wedding shower guests to expect.
- Help
your guests mingle and interconnect. Include
one or two activities or games
that allow your guests to interact when
they first arrive, and choose those that
fit their age and interests. Games
such as Human
Bingo and Sketch-A-Guest
are fun ice-breakers.
- Use
music, decorations,
favors and
game prizes to create the appropriate atmosphere
so that your guests are caught up in the
excitement of the event.
- Arrange
for someone (usually the maid of honor)
to make a toast
to the bride. Other toasts and speeches
by the hostesses and friends can add interest
to the occasion too - but don't push anyone
to make a speech if it would make them feel
uncomfortable.
- Assign
someone to take photographs - and be sure
that the bride is pictured with each guest.
- Guide
your guests throughout the shower by introducing
people, keeping the conversation going,
introducing each game,
announcing when to eat, when to toast,
and when to start the gift opening ceremony.
- Choose
a simple menu.
Avoid cooking tasks that will take you away
from any of the bridal shower activities
- this is not the time to try a new, complicated
recipe. In some cases you may want to select
a menu which considers a guest's special
diet requirements.
- Theme
ideas should add individuality to the event.
When possible, carry the Shower theme idea
through to the favors,
decoration and
centerpieces.
- Have
appropriate music
playing in the background to add to the
atmosphere. Keep
the music soft so that you don't inhibit
conversation.

Remember that the bride is to be pampered and
showered with affection, so be sure that she
gets the center chair, and a corsage or sash
to wear.
Don't assign the bride any tasks. Allow her
to relax and enjoy the company of her friends
and family, away from the turmoil of pre-wedding
planning. It is a time for bonding and comfortable
conversations in an intimate atmosphere.
As the bridal shower hostess, you need to be
on your toes to make sure that the bridal shower
runs to schedule, the bride remains the center
of attention, and that everyone has a good time
- and that includes you!
